Charleston Commercial Fisherman Mark Marhefka

I love my job! I know I say that a lot but really I do. One reason is that I get to meet and hang out with some of the most interesting people and learn about their lives and careers. I recently finished a project for the south carolina aquarium where I had the pleasure of photographing several people who call the lowcountry their home.

Mark Marhefka is one of the few commercial long-liners left here in Charleston. As a boy I remember cruising in the boston whaler down to Shem Creek to look at all the fishing boats come in with their daily catch. The fishing fleet on Shem Creek is a lot thinner these days but Mark is fighting back from the decks of his long-liner boat "Amy Marie" along with many others striving to offer fresh local sustainable seafood to the Charleston Area.
